I decided to spend an afternoon observing the fascinating (sort of) social life of us USC students at the local Starbucks near campus. With my eyes and ears open and my handy invisibility cloak (how cool would it be to own one?), I learned some interesting things about what goes on during coffee breaks...
It’s a typical Thursday afternoon at the local Hoover and Jefferson Starbucks: young minds studiously work on upcoming papers, concerned teachers mentor eager students, and friends (many of which follow the rule of three) congregate over coffee and sticky pastries to discuss the highs and lows of the week.
While the entire world around the corner java shop continues to change, the “business as usual” pattern at the overly-priced coffee conglomerate creates a cloud of comfort that surrounds the café. In its own way, the commonplace hangout even represents how all students at USC are the same: struggling to make it, while trying to find their place in this world…or a reasonable price on a decent apartment.
As the sun starts to weaken and the outside patio begins to transform into a shadowy nook, two separate groups of students chat about their current living situations simultaneously. Stereotypically the two crowds are at opposite ends of the social spectrum, one being the conventional blond, sorority girl troupe and the other symbolizing the clichéd male, film posse. But, in actuality, the two crews deal with similar problems, including apartment hunting.
Just like the petite brown birds flutter around the gray cobbled ground searching for scraps of food, students from all different backgrounds and social scenes are beginning to rummage all over the city of Los Angeles for the perfect apartment. Low rent, their own bedroom, and easy freeway access are at the top of everyone’s must-have list.
So as students sip on their routine four-dollar pick-me-ups, while trying not to get hit by the constant whizzing by of colorful bike riders, they seem at ease knowing they are not alone.

Kara Kara Bo Bara...
This week I got the opportunity to interview the wonderful Kara Nichols and I learned a lot of interesting things about her. The thing that stuck out the most for me was how much she has already moved in her life. I would think it’s really hard moving around all of the time while growing up and Kara was able to tell me about her firsthand experience with it.
Q: Where are you from?
A: I was born in Birmingham, Alabama but I’ve moved about 10-11 times in my life so I don’t know if I’m from anywhere specifically. I’ve lived all over the country.
Q: How come you moved so much?
A: My dad just kept changing jobs or getting transferred at the job…so we were just always on the move.
Q: Was it hard to make friends at so many different schools?
A: Yeah…I went to five elementary schools. It’s hard as a kid just getting things done. I remember I went to all day kindergarten in Georgia and I almost failed because I couldn’t tie my shoe. And I got F’s in cutting and in handwriting. My mom was like, “She’s 2-3 grade levels above in reading so she’s perfectly fine. I don’t care if her handwriting doesn’t have the right curly q.” So that was hard.
Making friends is hard too just because people just stick with the people they know. Especially because I moved between sophomore and junior year of high school and I think that was very hard. I had a ton of friends from middle school and high school in California, but then when I moved to Kansas most of the people had lived there since early elementary school and they all had their friends and weren’t interested in really making new friends. When you move in and out you’re kind of always on the outside.
Q: So do you have any old friends that you keep in touch with now?
A: No, I don’t keep in touch with anyone from before college. Most people have tons of friends from high school or when they were young and I mean I had best friends when I was little and I tried to keep in touch with them but it just never worked out. I had 3 or 4 best friends that I hung out with everyday in different places. It’s one of those things where you write letters for a year or two and then after the first year letters start tapering off. And this is before computers got really big and I’m not a big computer person myself. So that makes it pretty hard.
Q: Looking back, do you prefer any specific area?
A: So far I’ve liked California the best but I think eventually I want to head back towards the east coast because I spent the summer in Washington, D.C. and I really liked it. So maybe back there at some point.

My Favorite Sites
Okay, so of course I frequently check my facebook and myspace accounts to keep in contact with my friends but I'm not going to count those sites on this list. Why you needed to know this...I don't know. But there you go.
The Internet Movie Database
I love film. Everything about it. The creative side, the business side, the gossip side (guilty) to some extent, just everything. That's why I am also studying cinema-television here at USC and why I love imdb.com so much. I don't know exactly what profession I will end up with but I know I want it to be something related to the industry. I like to keep up with developing projects and who's doing what film. The site allows me to do this and also gives daily entertainment news and background information on any actor. And it has come in very handy when I'm watching something on TV and I recognize someone but I can't quite figure out where I know him/her from. Whenever that happens to me it's really hard for me to continue watching without figuring it out. I can always relax more once I remember, so imdb has saved me many times from agonizing over an unidentified face for hours. :)
People
Keeping with my entertainment obsessions, I admit that I incessantly visit people.com. I just really like to keep up with pop culture and I mean we do live in LA so it's kind of hard not to be surrounded by it. And while I shallowly like to look at the site's "Star Tracks" there are other entertainment news stories on the site that supply useful information about the business. I also really like the design of the webpage. There is a lot of different things to look at but it is organized in a simple way where it's easy to navigate. But did you know that Marilyn Manson is supposedly dating Evan Rachel Wood now? Shocking, I know. But who wouldn't want to know that? :)

Last, but not least, I like to try and keep up with current events so I check latimes.com frequently. While I never have time to read as many articles as I should I like to at least get the gist of what's going on in the news everyday. Then I pick and choose what jumps out at me the most. But checking this site is important so that I keep up with what's going on in the world. And I like how if you find a story you really enjoyed you can easily email it to another person by just clicking a link.
